More than $700,000 was raised here yesterday at a four-state Southwest regional conference of the United Jewish Appeal. Some 500 Jewish community leaders attended the parley.

Associate Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, chief speaker at the conference, declared that “Israel must never be allowed to become the victim of aggression.” Justice Douglas called Israel “one of the great bastions of strength” in the “world struggle against Communism.” He insisted that “America needs Israel” because “our democratic allies in the ideological war against Communism are not many.”
