Need for re-establishment of the arms balance in the Middle East was seen here today in the light of the aggressive anti-Israel speeches made by the Arab delegates at the Security Council during the debate on the British resolution and following deletion from the resolution of language which spoke of a “mutually acceptable” Arab-Israel peace, to which the Arab delegates objected.
(The New York Time-in an editorial today, said: “The United Nations and the Security Council never seemed weaker than they did yesterday when the Council allowed four Arab states, aided and abetted by Russia, to take out of the Palestine resolution the words that expressed hope for a peaceful settlement on a mutually acceptable basis.” The editorial advised the UN to open its eyes “to the eternal truth that empty compromises win no victories, and that in the end principles worth defending must be defended.”)
