Several thousand Argentine Jews gathered in Buenos Aires’ largest theatre last night to honor Chaim Levanon, Mayor of Tel Aviv, in a rally sponsored by the United Jewish Campaign. The meeting was chaired by the co-chairmen of the campaign, Samuel Rabinovich and Leon Cajani, and heard a message from Israel Ambassador Arieh Kubovi, who could not attend because of illness.
Mayor Levanon told the audience that 500 Argentine Jews live in Tel Aviv and that Israel has 22 settlements of Argentine youths and that he brought greetings from them to their families in this country. He spoke glowingly of Israel’s achievements, but stressed the Arab threat along the borders. He compared relations between Egyptian Premier Nasser and Soviet Foreign Minister Shepilov to the Molotov-Ribbentrop meeting “from which Jews suffered horrors.”
