No stateless and alien residents of West Germany will be inducted into the new German army within the foreseeable future, the Ministry of Defense here has informed the Central Council of Jews in Germany in reply to a query pertaining to the status of young Jewish DP’s of military age who survived Nazi concentration camps and have remained in Germany.
The council query was prompted by a section of the military service law adopted in July, which authorizes the drafting of stateless and alien residents, provided a special Federal Government directive to that effect is first issued. Such a step is not contemplated at this time, the Defense Ministry said.
Jews of German citizenship who live in the Federal Republic are subject to the draft. At present, however almost no German Jews in the age brackets concerned are to be found in West Germany, and until 1965 there will be but a hassall
