Egyptian fedayeen raids, which continue unabated, may be encouraged by the absence of any action by the United Nations to ensure compliance with the General Assembly resolution of November 2, 1956, which ordered a cease-fire in the Sinai campaign, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry declared here last night.
The Israeli spokesman, noting that the resolution instructed Egypt to desist from raids into Israel territory, said that “since no pressure appears to have been put on Egypt in this respect, she apparently sees herself free to carry on her fedayeen raids.” He detailed the acts of sabotage committed by fedayeen during the past week.
At the same time, the spokesman issued another warning to the Government of Jordan against allowing such raids to be launched from its territory. He stressed that a similar warning had been voiced last week.
Israeli circles today disputed a Mixed Armistice Commission statement yesterday holding Israel guilty for the ambushing of a vehicle in Jordan last December 30. They noted that an American-mand hand grenade–not used by Israeli forces–was found on the scene, as well as Hebrew-marked cartridges, proving that the Arabs had initiated the incident which ended in the killing of one Arab and the wounding of another.
Meanwhile, diplomatic sources here indicated that Israel’s absence from the MAC is a subject of diplomatic activity. During the past few months Israel has refused to attend meetings of the Israel-Jordan MAC insisting that condemnations of Jordan have ceased to have meaning in terms of preventing recurrence of infiltration and cross border attacks.
