Both the Mapam and Achdut Avodah Parties, partners in the Mapai-led coalition government of Israel, reaffirmed today their opposition to Israeli adherence to the Eisenhower Doctrine. However, observers here believe that neither party will drag down the government of Premier David Ben Gurion over this issue.
The Mapam committee, in a statement adopted at its session, expressed both political and practical opposition, warning that Israel’s lining up with the United States might interfere with possibilities of emigration from Eastern European countries. The committee refused even to go along with the idea of a joint American-Israel statement of common aims in the Middle East, holding it “unnecessary and harmful.”
The Achdut Avodah instructed its ministers to oppose participation in a joint statement concerning the Eisenhower Doctrine. Neither party took a decision on leaving the Cabinet if they were out voted, which was interpreted here as a favorable sign.
