The West German Federal Republic has conferred one of its highest honors, the Grand Cross of Merit with Star; upon Fritz Kortner, Germany’s greatest living actor and stage director, on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Only three other Jews have received this distinction in the eight years of the federal republic.

Dr. Theodor Heuss, the Federal President, made the award which was presented to the actor by Dr. Wilhelm Hoegner, Minister-President of Bavaria. His name is also being inscribed in the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund in connection with his birthday. Mr. Kortner is a board member of the United Jewish Appeal in Germany.
