Canadian Jewish Congress Explains Humanitarian Aspects of Shechita

The Central Region of the Canadian Jewish Congress has issued a statement explaining the purpose and humanitarian aspects of shechita, Jewish ritual slaughter, in an effort to offset unfavorable and misleading press accounts, CJC headquarters here announced today.

The statement noted that veterinary scientists have agreed that shechita “brings almost instantaneous and painless death, and is at least as humane as any other system of slaughter. It pointed out that a whole system of rules and practices surround the practice of shechita expressly designed in the Jewish tradition of preventing pain to any living creature.”
