A leading national Catholic Weekly, “The Register,” warned today that seizure of Lebanon by pro-Nasser elements would be “especially helpful to the United Arab Republic in its drive to eliminate the State of Israel.”

A warning was voiced by the paper that Israel was in peril and that “unless courageous UN action is forthcoming the little republic, an outpost of tolerance and decency in the Near East, seems doomed.” The national circulation of the magazine is over 1,000,000.

The Register cited a view of a Near Eastern Catholic that American intervention against Israel, Britain, and France “two years ago, at the time of the Suez Crisis, was a grave blunder.” The paper said “the lot of Christians in Egypt, never good, has become almost intolerable since the advent of Nasser in 1952. Under social and economic pressures, numbers of native Christians have defected to Islamism.”
