Indications have been received here that Britain has recently become less eager to evacuate Jordan. While the motivation for the British about-face are not clear, it is believed to hinge on United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold’s visit to the Middle East.

One version has it that the British are dragging their heels in the hope of forcing Mr. Hammarskjold to take real steps to safeguard Jordan’s independence instead of anticipated wishy-washy motions which would actually pave the way for a Nasser take-over in Jordan.
