For the first time since the days of King Solomon, Israel today exported copper. The cargo, bound for Germany, left aboard a Danish freighter which weighed anchor from Haifa.
The copper was wined from the Timna mines the very lode exploited by King Solomon, whose ships sailed the Gulf of Akaba and the Red Sea, bringing Israeli products to Africa. The ore was refined on the mine site and shipped overland to Haifa.
The cargo consisted of pondered copper, currently the chief output of the mines. Tie works employ 240 people and currently produce 9,000 tons of powdered copper.
