A meeting between the Pope and an Israel Foreign Ministry official led observers here today to predict that relations between Israel and the Vatican were likely to improve. Diplomatic relations, however, were considered unlikely in the immediate future.

The meeting between the Pope and Maurice Fisher, Deputy Director of the Israel Foreign Ministry, was described as one of several recent contacts. Sources here indicated that the relationship between the Jewish State and the Catholic State was discussed at the Fisher meeting in a way that was “franker and more practical than ever before.”
