59 Students Graduate from Jewish Theological Seminary; Several Women

Fifty-nine students, including several women, today received diplomas at the 65th annual commencement exercises of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America here. Of the new graduates, 21 are rabbis; six are cantors; 31 received bachelors degrees; and one received the degree of Doctor of Hebrew Literature.

The honorary degree of Doctor of Hebrew Letters were bestowed upon Dr. Azriel Eisenberg, executive vice-president of the Jewish Education Committee of New York. Dr. Emanuel Gamoran, educational advisor of the Commission on Jewish Education of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the Central Conference of American Rabbis; Dr. Abraham Millgram, director of the United Synagogue Commission on Jewish Education; and Aaron Zeitlin. Hebrew poet and lecturer in Hebrew literature at the Seminary s Teacher Institute, Honorary doctorates were also awarded at the ceremonies to Rabbi Joel Geffen, the Seminary’s national director of the department of field activities and community education; Rabbi David A. Goldstein, spiritual leader of Har Zion Temple, Philadelphia; and Rabbi Max Zucker, spiritual leader of Temple Emanuel of Passaic, N.J

Alan M. Stroock, chairman of the Seminary’s board of directors, announced the appointment of Dr. Bernard Mandelbaum as provost of the Seminary.
