Israel has received with somewhat qualified gratification the speeches by the various United Nations delegates on the blockade by Egypt of Israel shipping and cargoes through the Suez Canal.

Israel is gratified by the fact that 12 out of 24 speakers expressed their countries” support for freedom of passage through the Canal for all nations. This seems to be a higher percentage than was expected here.

However, only one–Uruguay–mentioned Israel’s right specifically, while only one–Denmark–mentioned specifically the detention by Egypt of the Inge Toft. This is less than expected. Israel was particularly gratified by the unequivocal stands taken by Italy and Turkey which have close ties with Egypt.
