Israel opposes reactivation of the Palestine Conciliation Commission by the United Nations, as demanded by the Arab states in the Arab refugee debate at the UN, it was learned here today.
The government’s view regarding revitalization of the PCC is understood to have been relayed this morning to United States Ambassador Ogden R. Reid, who was summoned to the Foreign Ministry for a conference with Foreign Minister Golda Meir.
Israel is understood to see no opportunities for peaceful negotiations arising from a revitalization of the PCC. The key to the refugee situation, in Israel’s view, lies in the persistent Arab refusal to recognize the Jewish State. The Israeli belief is that the Arab representatives at the UN seek revival of the PCC as a “smoke-screen” masking their refusal to consider any reasonable solution of the refugee problem.
Mrs. Meir today signed an agreement on behalf of Israel with the United Nations Special Fund providing for the allocation by the fund of $320,000 for a flood-prevention project. The Government’s share of the cost of the project will amount to 1,200,000 Israel pounds ($672,000). Israel is the first country to receive an allocation from the Fund.
