More than $1, 250, 000 in cash was presented here yesterday for the 1960 Histadrut campaign at the mid-winter national conference of the National Committee for Labor Israel which is conducting the campaign. The 1960 goal of the drive is $5,000,000.
Charles Zimmerman, chairman of the board of the NCLI, reported at the conference that the AFL-CIO and the Histadrut are Jointly sponsoring an Institute of Labor Studies for Asian and African trade union leaders which will be established soon in Tel Aviv. Courses would include administrative techniques, collective bargaining and economics.
He said that the executive council of the AFL-CIO approved the project at its meeting earlier this month in Bal Harbor, Fla. George H. Meany, president of the AFL-CIO, announced that the American labor movement would provide half of the scholarships, costing $175, 000, for the first year of the Institute’s operation. The National Committee for Labor Israel will provide the other $175, 000.
Isaiah Avrech, American representative of Histadrut, reported that the peoples of Asia and Africa had been sending delegations for short-term studies in Israel, and had been guests of Histadrut at its, Workers’ College. Histadrut and the Israel Government have also sent experts and technicians to various countries from Ghana to Burma to aid in the economic development of those lands, Mr. Avrech said.
