Jordanian Premier Hazza Majali today denounced President Gamal Abdel Nasser of the United Arab Republic for his “irresponsible” abuse of the Shah of Iran for the latter’s statement recognising Israel, it was reported here from Amman.
Addressing a press conference in the Jordanian capital on an exchange of notes between the Amman and Teheran governments in connection with the Shah’s statement on Israel, Premier Majali said that Nasser had taken “a quick decision” on the matter and that the U.A.R. President was dealing with the Palestine case hypocritically. Premier Majali accused Nasser of abusing both Iran and King Hussein with the intention of diverting public attention from deteriorating internal conditions in the United Arab Republic.
In his note to King Hussein, the Shah reiterated his earlier statement that there had been no change in the de facto recognition of Israel by Iran. Official or legal recognition of Israel had never been the subject of discussion, the Shah noted. “It is regrettable, ” the Shah declared, “that certain Arab states with whom Iran has religious ties did not appreciate Iran’s good intentions and did not show any sign of friendship towards Iran.”
