The number of attacks by Algerian rebels against Algerian Jews is increasing, and there has been a corresponding increase in the number of Jews registering for immigration to Israel, according to reports here today.
In addition to the grenade attack on Jewish worshipers leaving the synagogue in Constantine on Rosh Hashanah, in which 36 were wounded, there have been attacks in other places. Among these were the killing of a Jew in front of a police station, and the murder of a 70-year-old Jewish cemetery guard.
The onslaughts are causing particular concern in small towns where the Jewish communities are small. Tension also was reported in southern Algeria, where Moslems have stopped buying property from Jews in the apparent belief they will soon be able to get the property without paying for it.
Reports from Oran indicated that from 150 to 200 Jews were registering each month for immigration, a total which equals the annual figure of such registrations in previous years.
