The Moroccan Ministry of Justice has named Grand Rabbi Chalom Messas president of the Casablanca rabbinical court, ending a year-long vacancy caused by the death of Grand Rabbi Ben Soussan.
The appointment was received with satisfaction by Moroccan Jews, particularly in rabbinical circles because it had been feared that the vacancy would not be tilled. Grand Rabbi Malka Moise is vice-president of the rabbinical court.
Two of three Jewish candidates were elected today as members of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Casablanca. The winners were David Azoulay, secretary general of the Casablanca Jewish committee, and M. Benouaich, both members of the National Union of Popular Forces. Meyer Obadiah, president of the Casablanca Jewish Committee, a member of the Istiqlal party was defeated.
