The Stanford University chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, which was ousted by the high council of the national fraternity yesterday in Chicago because it had accepted four Jewish students as members, said today that it would become an independent local fraternity.

The chapter had the strong backing of the university president and state authorities in its refusal to oust the Jewish members as directed by the national high council.

The California Attorney General’s office, meanwhile, said that it would ask the University of California Board of Regents and the State College Board of Trustees to require schools under their jurisdiction to withdraw recognition of local chapters of the national fraternity.
