United Hias Service Appoints New Director for Work in Latin America

The appointment of Harold Trobe as director of the United Hias Service operations in Latin America was announced here today by James P. Rice, executive director of the organization. Mr. Trobe is replacing Israel Jacobson who will, in turn, take over Mr. Trobe’s former post in Paris as director of United Hias operations in Europe and North Africa.

Mr. Trobe was director of the European and North African operations of United Hias since 1957, Prior to that time he had directed refugee rehabilitation and resettlement programs for the Joint Distribution Committee since 1944 in several European countries. Mr. Jacobson has headed the United Hias Latin American program since 1955. He had also directed JDC programs in various European countries from 1944 to 1953.

Mr. Rice pointed out that United Hias has resettled in Latin America approximately 10,000 refugees and immigrants since 1955, out of the total of close to 50,000 Jewish men, women and children who have been resettled in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Latin America during that period.
