The Algerian Jewish Committee for Social Studies called to day on Algeria’s Jews to remain calm and not give way to provocation, it was reported here from Algiers. The appeal was issued while French troops patrolled the Jewish sector in Oran in the uneasy calm prevailing since the two days of Arab-Moslem fighting there during Rosh Hashanah.

The committee, am affiliate of the World Jewish Congress, reviewed the heavy losses sustained by the Jewish community during the past six years but added that the “imperatives of Jewish religion and Jewish morals place respect for the human person above any other consideration.” The communique added that “during these tragic hours the Jews of Algeria, who are free men and alone responsible for their opinions and their destiny, must keep calm.”
