Daniel Mayer, French political leader and chairman of the World ORT Union executive committee, said here tonight that the solidarity of American Jewry, patterned on a kind of “communal Marshall Plan” was the decisive factor in the reconstruction of the surviving Jewish communities of Western Europe. Mr. Mayer spoke at a dinner-reception in his honor given by the American Ort Federation.
The French leader, who was Minister of Labor in seven successive postwar French governments, said one of the most heartening developments for European Jewish communities was the coming of age of a new generation which was helping to replenish Jewish communities which had been decimated by the Hitler holocaust. He said the education of this youth was one of the most serious challenges to Jewish life today, asserting that the number of Jewish students in the 14-18 age bracket had doubled during the past decade.
