Senator Hubert Humphrey, Minnesota Democrat, reporting today on his visit to Israel during his recent trip abroad said that “the progress in Israel has been nothing short of sensational in four years.”
“I was there in 1957,” he said; “Since then progress has been amazing. The Israelis are also doing a great job in Africa with a technical assistance program; They are demonstrating the capacity to do things which are beyond our wildest flights of imagination.
“Prime Minister Ben-Gurion was constituting his government at the time I was there; I found him in a mood of cooperation with his neighbors; He made one of the most conciliatory and I think, helpful speeches of his entire career on the day that I visited with him.
“We had a long talk in the morning about the situation in the Middle East; Prime Minister Ben-Gurion in the afternoon extended the hand of cooperation and friendship to his neighbors, and I think, ushered in a new era of better relationships in the Middle East if the neighboring states are willing to accept his expression of cooperation,” the Senator declared.
