Education Minister Abba Eban called on local authorities throughout Israel to provide larger allocations for sports. He said that less than one-third of Israel’s school have athletic facilities.

He stressed that the establishment last year of a National Sports Authority was an effort to advance physical education and pointed out that while the Authority’s budget had been doubled to 600,000 pounds ($336,000) this was far from adequate.

The Minister made his comments in reply to motions in the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, for a discussion of the status of sports in Israel. He proposed that the matter be submitted to committee with the goal of increasing facilities by legislation to provide that all schools be equipped with gymnasiums.
