Australian Jewish leaders today requested Minister of Education E. Wetherelt to alter the social studies syllabus in the public schools in New South Wales, where Scripture is taught to elementary school pupils as part of the curriculum.
Emphasizing that the Jews of Australia favor religious instruction in public schools, the delegation insisted, however, that such teaching be placed outside the secular subjects, and be removed from the social studies syllabus. They told the Education Minister that Scripture was religious teaching, and should be taught “by experienced, informed teachers of the same faith or denomination as the pupils to be taught.”
H. B. Newman, president of the Jewish Board of Deputies, led the delegation, which included three rabbis: Dr. I. Porush, Dr. H. Freedman and Dr. R. Brasch; as well as H. Goldstein, executive member of the Board. Mr. Wetherell promised to give careful consideration to the views expressed by the Jewish leaders.
