Cardinal Dom Augusta da Silva, of Bahia, today notified the Confederation of Jewish Communities of Brazil that he will support fully “all the noble and justified demands of the Jewish community,” at the forthcoming Ecumenical Council to be convened at the Vatican next month. He pledged to support efforts to be made at the sessions of the Council to eliminate from Catholic texts all anti-Jewish expressions.
With the receipt of this assurance from Cardinal Dom Augusta da Silva, the Jewish community in this country has now received pledges on this issue from all four of the Catholic archbishops in Brazil. The three other cardinals made similar promises to the Confederation within the last month.
