The West German Government today formally requested the Government of Chile to extradite Walter Rauff, a leading Gestapo officer and former general of Hitler’s SS, who is under arrest in Chile on German charges of having participated in the wartime murder of 90, 000 Jews.

An indictment against Rauff was handed up here yesterday. Although no extradition treaty exists between West Germany and Chile, the Government requested, nevertheless, that it be permitted by Chile to bring the war criminal here for trial. Rauff was arrested in Chile two months ago at the request of the Bonn Government.
