Jacob Altmaier, Jewish member of the Bundestag, lower House of the West German Parliament, died here yesterday, aged 73, Death came suddenly after he had attended a meeting of the Bundestag.
A journalist since 1913, and active in the Social Democratic Party, Mr. Altmaier was also a member of the Consultative Assembly of the European Council. He had been given large credit for helping to bring about the German-Israeli reparations agreement in 1952, and for his work on behalf of restitution and indemnification of victims of Nazism.
From 1933, when Hitler came to power, until 1946, he lived mainly in France and Britain. He lost more than 30 relatives during the Nazi holocaust. Tribute to his memory was voiced in Parliament by leaders of the principal political parties in the House.
