The Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Ltd., a Scottish firm which is one of Britain’s most outstanding firms in the field, has been granted a 2,000,000-pound ($5,600,000) contract for construction of a fleet of “floating motels” to ply the Mediterranean Sea, it was announced here today by Israel Car Ferries. The latter, affiliated with S. A. Somerfin, of Geneva, which originated the “floating motel” plan, is a private non-governmental company.
The vessels will have cabin accommodations for 550 passengers and deck space for 150 passengers, plus garage space for about 120 cars. The contract is the first ever given by an Israeli shipping firm to a British yard.
