The International Atomic Energy Agency, a specialized agency of the United Nations, with headquarters here, asked Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology; at Haifa, to investigate the feasibility of the use of atomic energy for the desalination of sea water, it was revealed today. The study, according to the IAEA, will be conducted at Haifa by Prof. Fritz Ashner and Dr. Shimon Yiftah, both of Technion’s nuclear sciences department.
The Technion study, it was indicated, will be part of the agency’s international program for pooling research and know-how in the field of the use of nuclear energy for research in desalination, as announced in New York last week by President Johnson. President Johnson had mentioned the IAEA specifically as a central agency in such research.
