Details of action to counter rising anti-Semitism in Argentina were reported here today by Mare Turkow, secretary-general of the World Jewish Congress South American executive, who arrived in New York for a short visit.
Mr. Turkow declared that anti-Semitic organizations in Argentina are continuing their campaign and were supported by anti-Semitic statements by some Argentinian deputies, However, denunciation of the anti-Semitic wave had come from democratic parties, from governors of the provinces, and from university circles.
“Just before I left, ” Mr. Turkow reported, “the President and Vice President of Argentina issued Rosh Hashanah greetings in which they reiterated their abhorrence of anti-Semitism; Unfortunately, Argentinian democratic public opinion is not reacting sufficiently to the anti-Jewish attacks; That attitude is encouraging the Argentinian Nazis to step up their defamatory action and their terrorism against Jewish institutions and business property;”
Faced with these developments, Argentinian Jewry’s central representative body, the DAIA, has embarked on a wide scale information campaign to arouse the public to the dangers of the anti-Semitic activities. The DAIA is also taking action to counter the efforts of Arab League spokesmen to rouse the Argentinian community of Arab extraction against their Jewish fellow citizens, Mr; Turkow said.
“We are doing our best to reach an improvement in relations with the Arab community, “the WJC leader said. He stated that there had been no difficulty between the two communities in the past;
