Mayor Robert F. Wagner today honored Dr. Gertrud Luckner, the German woman who was imprisoned by the Nazis for her wartime help to Jews persecuted by the Nazis. Dr. Luckner, who is currently on her first visit to the United States, was presented with a plaque in special ceremonies at City Hall.

After the outbreak of the Second World War, Dr. Luckner was instrumental in helping Jews cross into Switzerland to save their lives. In 1943, she was arrested by the Gestapo while carrying money to aid Jews in Berlin.
