A series of widely advertised events honoring the memory of Solomon Mikhoels, the Yiddish actor who was murdered in 1948, during the Stalin purges of Jewish intellectuals, was launched here tonight at the Bakhrushin Central Theatrical Museum, according to an announcement by Novosti, the Soviet news agency without mentioning that Mikhoels was a victim of Stalin’s liquidation of Jewish writers and actors. Novosti linked the occasions merely to the observance of his 75th birthday. Novosti was born in 1890.
At the gathering here tonight, addresses lauding Mikhoels’ greatness as an artist, and works illustrative of his career, were presented by Prof. Moisei Belenki, critics Lyubov Freidkina and Mikolai Chushkin, actress Nataliya Parkalap, actor Abram Petrosyan, and Boris Filippov, director of the Central Writers Club. The program will be repeated March 26. On March 23, another observance honoring Mikhoels’ memory will be held at the Central Actors Club here, the Novosti report said.
