Hebrew University Plans to Inaugurate Department of American Studies

The Hebrew University announced today it would inaugurate a Department of American Studies during the forthcoming academic year. The department will offer graduate courses.

Applicants will be required to hold Bachelor’s degrees in one of the following fields: English Literature, Sociology, general history and Jewish history. The department will be headed by Prof. Jeshoshua Arieli of the university history department, a specialist in American history. The United States Educational Foundation in Israel made a grant of 150, 000 pounds ($50, 000) for the department.

A group of 87 students from 48 United States and Canadian universities have arrived for a year’s study at Hebrew University, it was reported today. They include two Christians. Fifty-two received scholarships from funds established through gifts to the American Friends of the Hebrew University. The majority of the visiting students are studying humanities courses.
