The decennial performance of the traditional Passion Play at Oberammergau, not due for a repeat staging until 1970, was reported here today as causing impassioned disagreement in the Bavarian town. The mayor and the director of the play, which relates the death of Jesus, are demanding script changes to eliminate anti-Semitic passages which blame the Jewish people for the crucifixion. Hans Schwaighofer, the director of the play, has resigned in protest against the village council’s refusal to alter the script in line with the mayor’s demand.
