The New York Board of Rabbis, representing the Reform, Conservative and Orthodox denominations of religious Jewry here, announced today the formation of a Community Council of lay leaders to deal with problems affecting the New York Jewish community and Jewish education. William Kaufman was elected president of the Council. Jack D. Weiler, chairman of the board of overseers of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, was chosen chairman; and Max Stern, a member of the board of Yeshiva University, was elected vice-chairman.
According to Rabbi Edward T. Sandrow, president of the Board of Rabbis, who made the announcement, this is the first time in the Board’s 85-year history that such a “united voice of religious leadership” has been formed here. One of the Council’s major goals, Mr. Kaufman said, would be the enhancement of Jewish education and “the appreciation of Jewish values in the world’s largest Jewish community.”
Rabbi Sandrow added that the Council would seek the utilization of mass media “for the understanding and appreciation of the Jewish heritage by the total community” as well as cooperation with city and state administrations in matters affecting the Jewish community in New York.
