The Israeli executive of the World Jewish Congress rejected today a charge from Israeli sources that the WJC approved a “conspiracy of silence” concerning the situation of Russian Jewry.
Maoz, the Organization for Russian Jews, charged yesterday that the WJC was supporting a campaign of silence on the issue. Itzhak Korn, chairman of the political committee of the WJC Israeli executive, in denying the charge, said that the plight of Russian Jewry had always been a major concern of the WJC. He said there could be differences of opinion on procedures on the problem, but that the WJC was always alert and always working for Russian Jewry.
Maoz said that Soviet officials had persuaded some Jewish leaders to keep silent about the conditions of Soviet Jews. It advised that, rather than minimizing the misery of Russian Jews, Jewish leaders should act at the present opportunity to persuade Soviet authorities to allow Jewish emigration.
