The New York Jewish Labor Committee and the National Trade Union Council for Human Rights urged Gov. Nelson Rockefeller to veto a “group libel” bill that would make it unlawful to make defamatory statements against religious, ethnic and other groups. The two groups charged the bill was “too vague and sweeping,”
David I. Ashe, chairman of the New York JLC and Charles S. Zimmerman, chairman of the NTUC, issued a statement describing the bill as “a serious danger to freedom of expression.” The bill was passed by the State Assembly last week, after it had previously been approved by the State Senate.
