American Labor Leaders Urge U.S. to Protect Israel Against Aggression

The American Trade Union Council for Histadrut, holding a four-day conference here, today adopted a resolution declaring that “the United States is committed to protecting Israel against acts of aggression by its neighbors. The security and welfare of the only democracy in the Middle East is of concern to all Americans and to the free world as a whole. We pledge our support to our government in any steps it may take to safeguard the rights and existence of the State of Israel.”

Principal speakers supporting this firm commitment included Louis Stulberg, president of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union; Jacob S. Potofsky, president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America; Herrick Roth, president on the Colorado State Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; Michael Mann, director of District 2, AFL-CIO.

Moe Falikman, chairman of the American Trade Union Council for Histadrut, reported that George Meany, AFL-CIO president; Walter Reuther, president of the United Automobile Workers; Joe Curran, president of the National Maritime Union; Paul Hall, president of the Seafarers International Union, and many others, have expressed solidarity with Histadrut, the Israel labor federation. The conference received a cable from Aharon Becker, secretary-general of the Histadrut in Israel, expressing appreciation to American labor for its “adequate response and expression in these days of grave danger to our existence, achievements and future.”
