A pastoral letter was read in Zurich churches today expressing the concern of the clergymen because of the threat of an armed conflict between Arabs and Israelis. The letter declared that the Jewish people, who have founded a country in Palestine after many sufferings “must not be oppressed again.”

(Pope Paul VI appealed directly to Israel and the United Arab Republic yesterday to safeguard peace in the Middle East. In cablegrams to his representatives in Jerusalem and Cairo, the Pontiff spoke of “the absolute necessity” of preserving peace.)
