Foreign Secretary George Brown told a crowded House of Commons today that Britain must not take sides in the war between the Arab countries and Israel but seek to assure a peaceful solution.
He reported that instructions had been issued to British forces in the area to refrain from becoming involved in the fighting. He added that the “right thing to do” was to get a “straightforward solution” through the Security Council as soon as possible, calling for a cease fire.
Sir Alec Douglas-Home, leader of the Opposition; asked for a debate on the Middle East war. Mr. Brown said he would try to arrange such a debate.
