The West German Ministry of the Interior reported today that the German National Democratic Party, a neo-Nazi grouping, had lost at least 5,000 members since its organization two years ago. The Ministry estimated the party’s present membership as from 23,000 to 25,000 paying members.

A change in the composition of the party was noted, with the intellectual and civil service elements dropping out. The central membership of the party now lies in the middle class, the ministry said. Most of those who quit the party in the leadership dispute that erupted earlier this year had no rightist radical past, and few of them joined the newly-formed National Peoples Party, set up by the dissident National Democrats.
