A leader of the Social Democratic Party which, with the Christian Democratic Union comprises West Germany’s coalition Government, warned today that the dangers of the radical right must be taken seriously, in view of Germany’s experience with the Nazi Party.

Herbert Werner, vice-chairman of the Social Democratic Party and Minister for German Affairs in the Government, issued the warning following a party conference at Bad Godesberg. He denounced the nationalistic right-wing National Democratic Party (NPD) which, he said, was neither national nor democratic. The “double lie (of its name) is intended to mobilize those who are dissatisfied with the policy of the present coalition government,” he said. He observed that the NPD gained much of its success as the result of newspaper headlines.
