The formal exchange of ambassadors between Britain and Egypt was completed with the arrival here today of Egypt’s former Deputy Foreign Minister, Dr. Hassan el-Fikky, who has been named Ambassador to the Court of St. James. Britain’s new Ambassador to Cairo, Sir. Harold Beeley, flew there yesterday. Prior to his departure he declared that “we are now entering a new period in the history of our relations with Egypt, and many of the old obstacles and misunderstandings have disappeared.” The Manchester Guardian noted today that Sr. Harold’s departure for Cairo marks a decision by Britain to exert its influence toward a peaceful settlement of the Middle East conflict “through the Arab countries rather than through or with Israel.”
