The designation of Bishop Terence J. Cooke as Archbishop of New York has been hailed by officials of the American Jewish Committee as auguring well for “the development of rich and fruitful relationships between the Catholic and Jewish peoples” of New York City. Bertram H. Gold, executive director, and Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum, director of interreligious affairs, noted that Committee officials had met with Bishop Cooke when he was Auxiliary Bishop and said he had demonstrated “a particularly keen and informed understanding of Judaism and the Jewish people.”
