A full page advertisement urging support for President Johnson on the basis of his stand on Israel and the Middle East appeared in The New York Times today. The ad was signed by Abraham Feinberg, a nationally known Jewish leader active in many Israel causes. It solicited contributions to “The Citizens for Johnson-Humphrey Committee” in care of Mr. Feinberg. The ad, headed “a personal statement about Lyndon B. Johnson,” carried a photograph of the President and Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol at their meeting at the Johnson ranch in Texas last January and quoted excerpts from the joint statement they issued on that occasion. It also quoted President Johnson’s five-point statement on the Middle East of June 19, 1967, following the Six Day War and other statements he made as Democratic Majority Leader in the Senate following the 1956 Sinai campaign.
“As you may know,” Mr. Feinberg wrote in the ad, “I share with many other Americans a deep concern for Israel’s destiny. I have been active in affairs concerning Israel for many years and have seen at first hand the extreme importance of American support for Israel. I have also seen how Israel can be hurt when that support is withheld. So has Lyndon Johnson…In May and June, 1967, how fortunate that Lyndon Johnson was President of the United States.”
Mr. Feinberg wrote further of the problem of Israel is only one of the questions that must be considered while American Operate in the process of selecting their President. There are other great questions at issue today ### aid to education, health care, the cities, poverty. I am convinced that Lyndon Johnson ### right things for our country…with the welfare of all Americans foremost in his mind.”
