Egypt’s President Nasser intends to propose a timetable to the Kremlin for implementation of the ” other steps” that the Soviet Union said last month would be taken if Israel “fails to respect the Security Council resolution” of Nov. 22, 1967 which, according to Russia and the Arab states, demands the immediate unconditional withdrawal of Israel from occupied Arab territories.
According to Jon Kimche, in an Evening Standard article today, Nasser will present the timetable during his two-day visit to Moscow that begins on July 4. Cairo attaches exceptional importance to this visit, Mr. Kimche said, and “no secret was made of the fact that Nasser invited himself under conditions which the Soviet leaders accepted as requiring immediate consultations at the highest level.” The Egyptians, Mr. Kimche wrote, “are certain that whatever else Dr. Gunnar V. Jarring (the UN peace envoy to the Middle East) will say in his final report six weeks from now, he will not be able to announce an impending Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories. This time, the Egyptians say, the Russians will have to cash in on their promises.”
