Yeshiva University reported here today that a New York Talmudical scholar has unearthed a hitherto obscure 12th Century commentary on the Book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Bible, which links the oral law tradition to the written texts to demonstrate the unity of ideas and laws expressed in the Bible, Talmud, Midrash and auxiliary sources.
According to the university, Dr. Michael Katz, a professor of Talmud at the affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, discovered the manuscript by Rabbi Meyuchas ben Elijah, a 12th Century scholar, in the Hebrew and Samarian section of the British Museum in London. Rabbi Meyuchas is believed to have lived in northern Italy or Greece during the latter part of the 12th Century, a period of Byzantine supremacy in Eastern Europe.
