Many Israelis believe that President-elect Nixon’s fact-finding envoy to the Middle East, William W. Scranton, “was taken in by smooth talk” from the Arab leaders he met during his week-long Middle East tour, the London Times reported in a dispatch from Tel Aviv today. According to the Times, Mr. Scranton was asked whether he thought Arab statements that convinced him of the Arab desire for peace contradicted the policy decision of the 1967 Arab summit conference at Khartoum which was “no peace, no negotiations, no recognition” of Israel. Mr. Scranton replied, “insofar as they were interpreted to me by Arab leaders, I do not see any differences,” the Times reported.
